Virginia Tech entered the 2024 season as a dark horse contender for the ACC Championship and College Football Playoff. However, the Hokies’ season has gone off the rails just four games into the season. Everything started in Week 1 with a surprising season-opening loss to SEC bottom-dweller Vanderbilt. Saturday was another blemish to Tech’s record, losing to former Big East rival Rutgers 26-23.

The score wasn’t indicative of how poorly the Hokies played. A late surge made the final game more appealing, as Virginia Tech rallied to tie the game at 23-23 after being down by 16 entering the fourth quarter.

Yet, safety in the second quarter, which would make former NFL player and current ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky proud, illustrated how Virginia Tech’s season had gone thus far.

Back against its own end zone, Hokies quarterback Kyron Jones stumbled to the ground over his offensive lineman’s foot. As he hit the turf, Jones released the ball, but the force of his fall threw the ball backward into the stands at Lane Stadium.

Drones did convert back-to-back two-point conversions on passes in the fourth quarter to tie the game. That’s before the Scarlet Knights answered the bell with a 24-yard field goal by kicker Jai Patel with 1:56 remaining in the game.

Virginia Tech had an opportunity, except the drive ended with Drones throwing an interception.

The loss extends the Hokies’ winless streak against non-conference Power 5 opponents. Virginia Tech hasn’t beaten a non-conference Power 5 team since 2017.

On another note, close games have not been kind to Virginia Tech under head coach Brent Pry. The Hokies are now 1-9 in one-score games under Pry.

Road only gets tougher in ACC play for Virginia Tech

The Hokies are 2-2 on the season. Their two wins came against Marshall and Old Dominion. Losing to Rutgers and Vanderbilt, two programs that annually sit at the bottom of their respective Power 5 conferences, evaporated Hokies fans’ hopes of competing for an ACC championship.

Fortunately, Virginia Tech remains alive with zero conference games. The new 12-team CFB Playoff format leaves the door open for a team with multiple losses to have a chance. All the Hokies have to do is win the ACC championship.

Florida State may be down, but Virginia Tech doesn’t have them on the schedule this season. Meanwhile, Miami and Clemson appear to be a handful in the ACC. And don’t count out Louisville, who has a championship-quality roster. There is also the presence of newcomer Stanford and the apparent emergence of Boston College and Georgia Tech.

The Hokies’ next four opponents are at Miami and Stanford, home against Boston College, and Georgia Tech before traveling to Syracuse and facing Clemson at Lane.

The identity of the one person killed in the home explosion in North Carolina has been revealed as the father of Tennessee Titans cornerback Caleb Farley. Robert Farley was 61 years of age.

Local authorities have centered their investigation on a natural gas leak. One other person suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the explosion.

Caleb Farley is the registered owner of the multi-million home in Mooresville.

Farley starred in college at Virginia Tech. He had six interceptions and 19 passes defended in 24 games with the Hokies. After opting out of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Farley entered his name into the NFL Draft.

The Titans selected him 22nd overall in 2021. A lingering back injury has hampered his career. He is currently on the physically-unable-to-perform list.

Farley was not present at the home when the explosion occurred. But, he was on the scene cooperating with authorities Tuesday morning.

Farley’s mother died of breast cancer in 2018 while the defensive back was attending Virginia Tech.

Tennessee Titans players and head coach Mike Vrabel reacted to the news of Farley’s father dying in the explosion.

“What’s most important is that we do everything we can to support him,” Vrabel said, per Brandon Hamilton of WBTV News.

Derrick Henry said he and Farley were the last ones out of the locker room last night and he is praying for him.

Titans safety Kevin Byard said he reached out to Farley by text. All he wants to do is be there for “his brother.”

FOX Nashville captured the moment that Titans players kneeled together in prayer after Tuesday’s practice.

Farley was not a victim. He was on the scene Tuesday morning and has cooperated with authorities. The multi-million home was located in Mooresville, N.C.

Iredell County authorities are investigating what led to the explosion. However, the focus is centered on the house’s natural gas lines.

Caleb Farley was a first-round draft pick of the Titans in 2021. He is currently on the physically unable-to-perform list with a back injury. He’s appeared in 12 games in the NFL.

Before becoming a pro, Farley starred as a quarterback at Maiden High School (N.C.). He committed to Virginia Tech and converted into a defensive back. He had 43 tackles, six interceptions, and 19 passes defended in 24 games with the Hokies.

Despite opting out for the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Farley was selected with the 22nd overall pick by the Titans in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Old Dominion stunned Virginia Tech 20-17 on Friday night. Monarch fans stormed the field at the conclusion of the upset as Hokies players tried to get off the field. The combination led to Virginia Tech tight end Connor Blumrick laying out an unsuspecting Old Dominion fan.

Blumrick converted from quarterback to tight end this season. He was targeted twice in the game against Old Dominion but did not record a catch. On Sunday, Blumrick issued an apology:

โ€œI would like to sincerely apologize to ODU and Hokie Nation for my actions after last nightโ€™s game. Following an emotional loss, in trying to get to the locker room safely, there was an incident including contact between myself and a fan, that I regret. This is not an accurate reflection of my character and I am truly sorry to those I have let down including my coaches, teammates and fans…”

It was a frustrating day for the Hokies. Brent Pry’s debut as Virginia Tech head coach didn’t go according to plan.

The Hokies turned over the ball five times, including four interceptions by quarterback Grant Wells. Additionally, their coaches also got stuck in an elevator at halftime. On top of all that, the Hokies discovered some players had items stolen from their lockers.

Meanwhile, Old Dominion fans were prepped and ready to celebrate the upset win. It’s second at home over Virginia Tech. However, the mixture of emotions led to Blumrick making contact with a fan.

The nightmare debut of Brent Pry as Virginia Tech head coach continues to get worse. After getting upset 20-17 by Old Dominion Friday night in Norfolk, Hokies players discovered items stolen from the visiting locker room.

Virginia Tech released a statement confirming items were missing from the locker room.

“The Virginia Tech athletic department confirmed there were items missing from the Virginia Tech locker room following the football game against Old Dominion in Norfolk Friday night,” the statement read. “The university is working with law enforcement and Old Dominion University on the matter, and will have no further comment.”

Old Dominion released a statement of their own shortly afterward. In the statement, the school apologized to the Hokies for the matter. Also, Old Dominion police are conducting an investigation.

“ODU Athletics has been working with Virginia and the Old Dominion Police Department since we became aware of the theft of personal property of a few Virginia tech student-athletes on Friday night. ODU athletics sincerely apologizes to Virginia Tech, the Virginia Tech athletic administration, and the young men who had items stolen. The ODU Police Department is working diligently to resolve this incident.”

Friday night was the Hokies’ first game under new head coach Brent Pry. The night turned from bad to worse during halftime. The Hokies trailed 10-7 when coaches got stuck in an elevator going to the coaches box. The incident delayed the start of the third quarter.

Virginia Tech had a bad snap on a field goal attempt. The football traveled 54 yards backward before ODU’s Robert Kennedy III scooped the loose ball up and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.

That was just one of five turnovers for the Hokies. Quarterback Grant Wells threw four interceptions. Meanwhile, Old Dominion capped off the win with a Blake Watson one-yard touchdown with 33 seconds remaining in the game.

As the final seconds ticked off the clock, Monarchs fans stormed S.B. Ballard Stadium field in celebration.

The loss dropped Virginia Tech to 0-2 at Old Dominion. The Hokies lost to the Monarchs in Norfolk 49-35 in 2018. The Hokies won the two meetings in Blacksburg in 2017 and 2019. All three of the previous meetings were under Pry’s predecessor Justin Fuente.

Pry’s era in Virginia Tech started with an eventful night that surely Hokies faithful will want to forget

Virginia Tech lost to No. 3 Clemson for their fourth straight loss. However, the focus of many Hokies fans was on the health of quarterback Hendon Hooker.

After losing a fumbled snap in the third quarter, ESPN cameras showed Hooker struggling on the sidelines. At times his body jerked and he appeared to be shivering as teammates talked to him. Ultimately, he walked back to the locker room with a trainer, drawing concerns of his health from many watching the game.

After the 45-10 loss, Virginia Tech head coach Justin Fuente explained Hooker was to return in the game following the third quarter fumble.

“The trainer came to me and told me he was cold,” Fuente said, per Mike Barber of the Roanoke Times.

Fuente said he was unaware if it was anything serious or not. He could only go by what the trainer told him.

Hooker had fumbled in the first quarter that resulted in him being benched to settle down. An injury to Braxton Burmeister forced Hooker back in the game. His return was short-lived with the fumbled snap and subsequent scary sidelines scene.

Hokies running back Khalil Herbert said Hooker was doing just fine and “warming up” in the locker room, per Andy Bitter of The Athletic.

Hooker needing to warm up is a great update considering the concerning scene along the sideline. A redshirt junior, Hooker missed the first two games of the season. A routine preseason coronavirus testing revealed an unrelated health issue that required immediate medical attention.

Virginia Tech did not disclosed Hooker’s medical issue due to student privacy. He appeared in seven games this season prior to Saturday’s game against Clemson, completing 65.1% of his passes for 1,332 yards and nine touchdowns with five interceptions. He has added nine rushing touchdowns this year.

Buzz Williams is officially leaving Virginia Tech to take the head coach job at Texas A&M. Texas A&M announced the hiring Wednesday.

Williams informed Virginia Tech athletic director Whit Babcock of his and met with his team about him leaving before the Aggies’ announcement. Virginia Tech confirmed the news of him leaving.

Williams spent five seasons leading Virginia Tech, taking over the head coach job from James Johnson in 2014. The Hokies were coming off a last-place finish in the ACC.

In his second season (2015-16), Williams led Virginia Tech to an NIT appearance and its first 20-win season since 2010-11. From there Virginia Tech became a formidable team, making three consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament.

This season, the Hokies finished with 26 wins, the most in program history, and a four-seed in the NCAA Tournament, it’s highest in program history.

The Hokies advanced to their first Sweet 16 since the tournament field expanded in 1985. And nearly defeated top overall seed Duke before falling 75-73.

Williams and Virginia Tech were on the cusps of becoming a perennial contender in the ACC. However, now the program must search for a suitable replacement that can maintain the program’s momentum in recruiting and competing.

Before taking over at Virginia Tech, Williams spent six seasons as head coach at Marquette, making the NCAA Tournament five times and the Sweet 16 thrice. The Greenville, Texas native also served as an assistant at Texas A&M for two seasons before becoming head coach at New Orleans in 2006.

Virginia Tech guard Ty Outlaw is expected to play Friday against Duke in the East Regional Semifinals in Washington DC. Outlaw was charged with possession of marijuana, according to Virginia court records. Hokies head coach Buzz Williams said in a statement Outlaw is expected to play after he passed a drug test performed by an outside agency prior to the team leaving campus for DC Wednesday.

“We intend to play Ty [Outlaw] on Friday evening,” Williams said in the statement. “We will continue to let the process play out and that’s all I can say at this time. If information changes, we will respond appropriately according to our policies.”

Authorities performed a search warrant of Outlaw while Virginia Tech was in San Jose, California last week for the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament.

Outlaw “fully cooperated” with authorities once the team returned to Blacksburg Monday, according to Williams in the statement.

In 34 games this season, the 6-foot-6 senior is averaging 8.7 points and 5.4 rebounds in 29.5 minutes per game. He is shooting 45.5 percent from the field, including 45.6 percent from three.

Virginia Tech’s bid to an upset of No. 6 Notre Dame fell way short as the Fighting Irish just had too many big plays and the Hokies failed to respond. As a result, the Hokies suffer another devastating non-conference win with Notre Dame hammering a 45-23 win in Lane Stadium.

Starting with a 56-yard pass from Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book to Chris Finke that set up a field goal to push the Irish lead to 10-0. Still, the Hokies were able to withstand the early tug-of-war until the second half. That’s when Notre Dame running back Dexter Williams broke off a backbreaking 97-yard touchdown run as his offensive line parted the sea for him to race down the football field. The score was after the Hokies were forced to punt in a 17-16 game to start the third quarter, as it took Notre Dame just two plays on their opening second half drive to gain full control of the ball game by extending their lead to 24-16.

A missed field goal by the Hokies on the ensuing drive was met by another big play touchdown for Notre Dame, as Book connected to a wide opened Miles Boykin on the run for a 40-yard touchdown that bust open the game at 31-16.

Then in the fourth quarter with time ever more precious, Book connected with Boykin again on a 3rd-and-2 pass that went 20 yards and led to another Notre Dame touchdown, putting away any doubt of the game at 38-16. But following a late Virginia Tech touchdown and failed onside kick, Williams sealed the remainders with 44 yards on two carries and the score.

And to think it may have been more brutal, as Book missed on four notable passes with wide opened receivers that all of which could have resulted in touchdowns. Certainly, the performance was not one of the better performances by Bud Foster’s defense.

2. Missed Opportunities

The Hokies had their opportunities to stay in the game and they just couldn’t execute. In the first half, they settled for three field goals after falling behind 10-0, despite reaching deep into Irish territory, including getting to the one-yard line off a 41-yard run by Steven Peoples. Peoples was gobbled up for no gain on back-to-back plays, and quarterback Ryan Willis was tracked down on third down, leaving the Hokies to settle for three.

The second half was more of the same. After a punt, the Hokies had two missed field goals and never truly threaten to score a touchdown until the game was already out of hand.

3. Ryan Willis Was Not Clean

Last week was Willis first start with Virginia Tech and he played a good, clean game against Duke. Saturday against Notre Dame he was far from it. His fumble lost on a sack led to a 42-yard fumble returned for a touchdown in the first half that extended Notre Dame’s lead to 17-9.

He misfired on a lot of passes, going 31-for-52 for 309 yards. He had two touchdown passes and an interception inย  the process. Having him attempt 52 passes wreaks of not playing clean football. It also takes away the element of managing a game. His two turnovers also laminate there’s going to be a learning curve.

4. Defense Still Suspect

For the second time in three games the Hokies defense was gouged for 400 plus yards. Old Dominion did it a couple of weeks ago and beat the Hokies scoring 49 points. Notre Dame did it and scored 45. It’s a defense that is filled with youth at linebacker and secondary.

Opposing offenses that attack with balance and throw the football vertically like Old Dominion and Notre Dame will give Virginia Tech fits. It’s growing pains, but that Justin Fuente can only hope is quickly dismissed.
